Hiccups are irritating, and everyone wants to get rid of hiccups as soon as possible. There are a number of common misconceptions related to hiccups about their causes and their remedies. One of the most common misconceptions includes hiccups which are caused when a close friend or relative misses you. But in reality, hiccups are sudden and involuntary spasms on our diaphragm muscles. When this muscle spasms, the vocal cords shut which results in the hiccup sounds.
The hiccups can arrive in the most unexpected situations and it is quite embarrassing when they arrive during serious or silent places.
So here, we come up with 10 ways to get rid of the hiccups quickly:
1. Acupressure
Acupressure is the best way to get rid of hiccups. Press the middle of your palm using the thumb of your other hand. Press the palm as hard as you can. You can also squeeze the ball of your thumb between your right thumb and forefinger.

2. Holding your Breath
The next time you have hiccups, take a deep breath and hold it. As the amount of carbon dioxide increases in your lungs, your diaphragm muscles relax. You can also increase the amount of carbon dioxide by breathing in a paper bag.

3. Stick the Tongue Out to get rid of hiccups
If you are in a comfortable space and alone, stick your tongue out. When you do this, you breathe more smoothly letting your diaphragm muscles relax.

4. Plug your Ears
Next time when you have hiccups, you can try plugging your ears using either cotton balls or earplugs or just simply sticking your fingers in them for 20 to 30 seconds. This sends a relaxation signal to the brain which ceases the hiccups.

5. Eat Something Sweet
Although there is no scientific evidence for this hack this hack does prove useful a couple of times. To stop the hiccups, you can eat a spoonful of sugar. It is believed that the grainy texture of the sugar irritates the esophagus which, in turn, stops the hiccups.

6. Drink Water
This is an age-old remedy to get rid of hiccups quickly. Take a minimum of nine to ten quick gulps of water. The rhythmic gulping will create contractions in the esophagus which will override the spasms of the diaphragm.

7. Peanut Butter
If you have a jar of peanut butter lying around, then nothing could be best than this remedy. Take a spoonful of peanut butter and eat it. The chewing and swallowing will disrupt the breathing pattern and will help you get rid of hiccups quickly.

8. Massage your Neck
One of the strangest techniques to get rid of hiccups is to massage your neck. Gently massage or rub the carotid arteries on the left and right sides of your neck. This increases the chances of hiccups stopping.

9. Hug your Knees
Sit on the floor comfortably and then bring your knees and chest closer by hugging your knees and sit like that for almost two minutes. Compressing your chest like this can help to stop the hiccups.

10. Suck on Lemon
Having something sour can also help you get rid of hiccups and nothing can beat lemon in that. Cut a lemon into the wedge and suck it. This remedy was successful in 14 out of 16 cases.
