Ian Joseph Somerhalder is a famous model, actor, director, and activist. He is best known for playing the character of Boone Carlyle in the TV series Love. His other popular roles include Dr. Luther Swann in Netflix’s sci-fi horror V Wars and Damon Salvatore in the CW’s supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries.

Ian Somerhalder was born and brought up in Covington, Louisiana. His parents Edna and Robert Somerhalder were massage therapists and independent building contractors respectively. Ian has an elder brother Robert and a younger sister Robyn.

In 2002, Somerhalder played the character Paul Denton in Roger Avary’s adaption of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, The Rules of Attraction. His character Paul was bisexual in the movie. The romantic comedy movie includes James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, and Shannyn Sossamon as well.
In 2004, Ian got his breakthrough role of Boone Carlyle in the TV series Lost. Even though his character died in the 20th episode of the first season, his character became a fan favorite. Later, his character was featured in 7 more episodes including the season finale.
In the TV series, Ian’s character was the first major character to die. However, ABC signed him for an extended one-year contract after he departs from the show. Even Ian mentioned in some of his interviews that being part of the Lost TV series was one of the greatest experiences of his life.
Ian was featured in the movie titled ‘The Tournament’ in 2009, in which he played the role of an assassin who participate in a lethal competition with other assassins. He was praised for his performance in the movie.
In 2009, Ian Somerhalder got the role of Vampire Damon Salvatore in the CW TV series The Vampire Diaries. Ian as Damon Salvatore was a series regular. The Vampire Diaries began as one of the most popular shows across the globe and become the highest-rated series on its channel.
Ian has also directed some episodes of The Vampire Diaries season 3 and even produced the series in Season 8. Ian Somerhalder won the Teen Choice Award and People’s Choice Award for the portrayal of Damon in the series.

For instance, he took part in the cleanup after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling disaster back in 2010. Ian also supports St. Tammany Humane Society which works for animal shelters and welfare.
He also supports It Gets Better Projects which works intending to prevent suicide among LGBT youth. On his 32nd birthday, he launched the Ian Somerhalder Foundation which educates people about the importance of protecting animals and the environment.
In 2011, Somerhalder paid a visit to Savory in Africa. He announced to make a documentary movie about him. Ian is also a celebrity campaigner for RYOT, an LA-based media company.

Ian was in a relationship with his The Vampire Diaries co-star Nina Dobrev. The couple was together from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, Ian started dating actress Nikki Reed. After a couple of months of dating, they announced their engagement in February 2015 and got married on April 26, 2015. The nuptial ceremony was held privately in Malibu, California. In 2017, the couple became parents of a girl.
Also, Somerhalder is very close with his former The Vampire Diaries co-star Paul Wesley. They even announced the launch of a straight bourbon whiskey which is named Brother’s Bond Bourbon.
