Meet Sam Taylor Johnson, British Filmmaker & Wife of Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson is a popular British filmmaker and photographer. She made her directorial debut with the 2009 film ‘Nowhere Boy’. The movie was heavily inspired by the childhood experiences of singer-songwriter John Lennon.

She also drew the media’s attention by getting into a relationship with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The couple has an age gap of about 23 years. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is 23 years younger than his wife.

Sam Taylor-Johnson was born and brought up in Croydon, London. Her parents David and Geraldine separated when she was nine years old. Her mother is an astrologist and yoga teacher. Sam has a younger sister Ashley and a maternal step-brother, Kristian.
Sam lived in South London near Streatham Common till her parents divorced. Later, she moved to an old schoolhouse in East Sussex. She attended Beacon Community College and later enrolled at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Sam Taylor-Johnson Career

Sam started her career exhibiting fine-art photography in the 90s. She collaborated with Henry Bon to reprise the role of Yoko Ono and John Lennon. In 1994, She exhibited a video titled Killing time which was mimed on an opera score.

She got her first solo show at Chisenhale Gallery, East London in 1996. In 1998, Sam was nominated for the annual Turner Prize which she lost to painter Chris Ofili. However, she won Illy Café Prize in the category of the most promising young artist at 1997’s Venice Biennale.

In 2002, Sam Taylor-Johnson got commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to create a video portrait of David Beckham. She shot to fame for her artwork Crying Men which featured popular Hollywood celebrities crying. These celebs include Robin Williams, Laurence Fishburne, Sean Penn, and Paul Newman.

In 2008, Sam Taylor was offered to direct Nowhere Boy. It was supposed to be a biopic about the childhood of John Lennon. San did a remarkable job as director for the movie Nowhere Boy.

The film was screened at London Film Festival and further released in the UK on Boxing Day. Nowhere Boy got positive reviews from fans as well as critics. Sam also got nominations for a BAFTA award.

In 2014, Sam Taylor-Johnson held a new photographic exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. The series titled Second Floor showed 34 photographs of the private rooms of Coco Chanel at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris.

 

Other music, film, and television work of Sam Taylor-Johnson

In 2006, Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the short film titled Death Valley the British version of Destricted. Later, in 2008, she directed a short film titled Love You More which was produced by Anthony Minghella and written by Patrick Marber.

In 2011, she directed the R.E.M. music video titled Überlin. The video featured Aaron Johnson who made some memorable moves. In the video, Aaron Johnson does prance, attempts pirouettes, chicken walks, wears bunny impressions, throws kung-fu kicks, punches the air, and even fondles his bottom.

Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the screen adaption of E. L. James’ best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. However, she walked away from directing the sequel of the franchise due to creative differences. In 2017, she commented that she regretted directing the ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey.

In 2021, Sam took the director’s chair to direct the biographical drama Rothko based on the Rothko case.

Personal life of Sam Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson has been affected by cancer twice. IN 1997, she went for treatment for colon cancer. 3 years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She started practicing Yoga and meditation for her better health.

In her interviews, she pointed out that meditation helped her survive everything. She further added that meditation and yoga helped her cope with the madness and busy routine she follows. In the 2011 Birthday Honors, Samantha Taylor-Johnson was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to the arts.

Sam Taylor-Johnson married the gallerist and art dealer Jay Jopling in 1997. The couple stayed together for 8 years and became parents of two daughters. In 2008, the couple separated by mutual agreement.

Sam started dating Nowhere Boy actor Aaron Johnson when they met on the sets. Aaron was the lead actor while Sam was directing the film. At that time, Aaron was 18 years old while Sam was 42. The couple announced their engagement at the film’s premiere. In 2012, the couple got married in a privately held ceremony at Babington House, Somerset.

Both Sam and Aaron took the name Taylor-Johnson. The couple is living a happily married life in Los Angeles, California, and is blessed with two daughters.
