Harry Potter is one of the most successful entertainment series of all time. And we say entertainment because it’s managed to impact multiple areas. The Harry Potter books were a massive hit with people young and old. And, it’s fair to say that the movies were an even bigger hit. But is Harry Potter now losing its magic charm years later?
The first Harry Potter novel to hit the scene was, of course, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. And it did so in 1997. That’s twenty-five years ago. The film adaptation of the book, which by this time had amassed author JK Rowling fans aplenty, hit the big screen four years late in 2001, which is still over two decades ago. And with this, you can start to see why Harry Potter is losing its magic charm.
It was inevitable, right? While the Harry Potter series, akin to what we have seen with other franchises over the years, is going to see a natural decrease over time in its charm and its pulling power. And this is because it was the books and the movies that made it what it is. Without any further official installments in the Harry Potter series, you could say the magic has dissipated for those who have already read the excellent novels from JK Rowling or watched the films.
Now, we’re suggesting that Harry Potter is losing its magic charm because that’s natural and part of the organic process. However, it doesn’t mean it’s lost all its pulling power altogether, far from it. And there are ways that new life has been breathed into the Harry Potter series. We may not have seen any new releases from the Harry Potter franchise on the novel or film front per se, but there have been spin-offs and the like that manage to keep the fire burning in a fashion.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Harry Potter prequel, also written by JK Rowling, is a prime example. Released following the end of the Harry Potter film series but designed to be a prequel, all the same, The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them debuted in November 2016, with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, following in 2018 and 2022 respectively. The fourth and fifth installments are currently in development.
Games have also been a way to keep the Harry Potter magic alive. Yes, we saw releases hit platforms during the franchise’s heyday, but there have been games taking inspiration from or based on Harry Potter since. This even extends into other areas of gaming, with video slots playing a crucial role in the interest created by an online casino site to keep the fire burning in the wizarding world. So while the magic may not be as strong and powerful as it used to be, Harry Potter remains and will continue to stay popular globally.
